What Could Sharp Pain In Back Of An Overweight Child Indicate?

My 8 year old son is overweight. He has been complaining of pain in his back and he says that his get feel like knives are going through them. He is 49 tall and weighs approximately 97 lbs. Additionally he complains of headaches on occasion. Activity level is normal for his age. I have been noticing bruising on him with slight bumps or getting knocked while at play. He says his mid/low back are bothering him. He eats a well balanced diet and very little sweets or candy. Fruit is always available.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Having back ache is due to being overweight. For his age, the excessive body weight is putting too much pressure to the muscles on the back cause excessive stretching and pain.

Losing weight will improve his problems.

As he gets bruising, that could be to trauma when playing.
However, if I was his caring doctor would advise to run further tests including :
- complete blood count
- urine analysis
- low back xray

Hope it was of help!
