Hello,

The area you are describing near tragus contains lymph nodes that get swelled up and pain in case of infection in the ear or in the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint), the joint that helps in opening and closing of jaws and side to side movements.

First of all, we should focus on the possibility of the ear infection as they are more commonly involved with the swollen lymph node. In that case, you should see an ENT specialist for clinical examination of the ear and investigations regarding the ear infection. If infection is present, you might need to go for antibiotic course.

However, if the ENT specilaist confirms that your ear in not having any infection, then you should visit an oral & maxillofacial surgeon for clinical examination of the TMJ and investigations regarding problems with the TMJ.

If you are in pain right now, you can take Ibuprofen 400 mg upto three times a day for relief. Do not apply any heat to the area until the diagnosis is made as it may worsen in case of infection.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
