What Could Cause Shaking Of The Lower Jaw, Right Arm And Hand In An 82-year-old?

My 82 year old sister developed shaking of her lower jaw and right arm and hand. She was tested for Parkinson s and was advised that was not the reason for her symptoms. Now the shaking has increased significantly and I am wondering what other illnesses might explain her symptoms. My email address is YYYY@YYYY and my name is Peggy.

Hi,

Her symptoms may belong to Essential Tremor if Parkinson have been rule out for her. She may need to test her thyroid hormone also to make sure that she doesn't have hyperthyroidism. Stroke also can make those symptom if she has history of hypertension.

Any drugs side effect that she use, alcohol or drug withdrawal or excessive caffeine? Essential Tremor is a nerve disorder characterized by uncontrollable shaking, or we called Tremors in different parts and on different sides of the body.

Cause is still not understood, but it is thought that the abnormal electrical brain activity and from the genetic. Areas affected often include the hands, arms, head, voice box (larynx), tongue and chin. The lower body is rarely affected.

It is not life threatening disorder, unless it prevents a person from caring for herself like eating, dressing or writing. It is only when the tremors becomes severe that they actually cause disability. It can occur at any age but more common in the elderly and symptoms become more pronounced with age but it is not a part of the natural aging process.

Doctor can usually diagnosis Essential Tremor based on reported symptoms and a complete neurological exam. There is no specific blood, urine, or other test used to diagnosis Essential Tremor. Medicine oral can help reduce the severity of essential tremor.

Because we do not know the exact cause of ET, there is no prevention. There is also no cure for ET, but treatments that provide relief from its symptoms maybe helpful in improving quality of life. She should see her home doctor for the real diagnosis and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
