Well internal bleeding is not unusual in a chronic binge drinker as there are several reasons for it to happen:

1) mostly the patient's , consuming alcohol on a chronic daily basis , develop gastric irritation(alcohol is irritant to our gut) resulting in inflammation of the lining of stomach also known as Gastritis resulting in fragility of the gut wall hence causing break in blood vessels and finally bleeding
2) In long term due to binge drinking (Specially if consumed on empty stomach) causes breach in the lining of gut again resulting in bleeding

3) Sometimes, after binge drinking, if there is forceful vomiting involved then there's certain tears develop in stomach mucosa causing bleeding

4) Due to long term binge drinking , there are certain changes in Liver cells resulting into what is known as Chronic Liver Disease - causing varices , Blood coagulation dysfunction etc. resulting finally into internal as well as external bleeding

So as you can see alcohol(specially in long term basis) can be real injurious as well as life threatening to a person(there're several other complex factors related to internal bleeding which I'm not going into in details)

Recovery off-course is possible but only after the assessment of grade of Liver injury ,as well as Upper GI Endoscopy(which I believe he has already undergone/going to be)plus several other interventions SoS.

a LOT. Alcohol is both a stimulant of the gastrointestinal tract including increased stomach secretion and increased motion of the stomach and also decreased tone of the upper sphincter of the stomach causing REFLUX into the esophagus

But also, alcohol is a solvent and can remove the protection along the stomach.

Also, it can cause vomiting which can be violent enough to rip the stomach.

Long term alcohol use can injure the liver and blood to lower the ability to clot. This is not with one time use but requires serious alcoholism for a long time.

Alcohol is often associated with ulcers.
