What Could Cause Hematuria?

Hi! I am a 40 year female that had hemorrhoid surgery two weeks ago. The same evening when coming home from surgery my bladder frozen and had to go to E.R. to get a catheter put in which I had in for 5 days after. Now a week and a half after catheter has been removed I have streaks of blood when urinating. What is this and should I be concerned?

Urologist 's  Response
Hello
Thanks for query .
Retention of urine is common after surgery of Haemorrhoidectomy due to reflex spasm of urethral sphincter
.
The hematuria that you have now is due to infection of bladder secondary to catheterization what is called as Catheter Cystitis .

Please get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefixime along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkalizer thrice daily .Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water .To keep your urine dilute This will help to control hematuria.
