Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Could Bloody Discharge From Left Nipple Indicate?
I have been having some bloody discharge from my left nipple and it does not happen from the right nipple. This only happens if the breast is pressed near the nipple and it is inconsistent. I had a clear mammogram about a year ago. This has been happening for about 3-4 months. I am 62 years old and morbidly obese (working on it).
Hi & Welcome to HCM. I appreciate your concern for the one sided bloody nipple discharge.
Bloody nipple discharge is most frequently benign in nature.
It is caused by intraductal papilloma, duct ectasia, and less frequently by breast cancer. Several diagnostic tests have been proposed to establish the cause of bloody nipple discharge.
Since it is unilateral (left sided), inconsistent and appears only after being pressed and occurring for the last 3-4 months, I would advice you to kindly consult a surgeon for proper clinical examination to rule out any breast lump that may be associated. You may be required to undergo ultrasound, and exfoliative cytology or ductal lavage in combination with cytology needed to rule out the underlying conditions.
Hope to have answered your query. Best regards.
