What Could Be The Reason For The Ear Pain And Muffled Hearing That Started After Jumping Into The River?

Hi my daughter is 25. We are in Costa Rica. She just jumped off a bridge into a river and within a few minutes started having ear pain. It got much worse within an hour. It seems to be both ears. She can't feel water in them . Her hearing is muffled. Laying with her head off the bed to se if that would loosen water caused pain. Candle ear treatment released some water. Gave her Advil. What else might help, and what else besides trapped water might it be

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that your daughter might be having Otitis media (infection/inflammation of the middle ear) most probably Serous Otitis media.

In this condition, the middle ear cavity gets filled with serous fluid, resulting in bulging of tympanic membrane (eardrum) & interference with transmission of sound resulting in conductive hearing loss.
Moreover, there is a connecting tract (known as Eustachian tube) between the middle ear & nasopharynx, obstruction of which can lead to sensation of blockage in ear & pain by un-equalisation of pressure.

Local examination of the ear along with tests like Audiometry & Tympanometry will help in clinching the diagnosis.
Depending upon this, further steps for management can be taken.
So, it will be better to consult an ENT specialist for further evaluation.

There is no need to worry, she will be fine.
Wishing her a Good Health.
Take care.
