What Could Be The Reason For Swollen Ankle?

My mother just noticed a sunken in place on the outer side of her left leg. She has not had an accident. The place is about 3 inches long and is sunken in about an inch. Her ankles are also very swollen. She has had issues with swollen ankles in the past and takes a diuretic for that. She is 75 years old.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There are numerous causes and conditions that produce swelling in the ankles. A few important causes are chronic venous insufficiency, Heart related issues, kidney disorders, liver problems, water retention etc.

A thorough and detailed evaluation along with a few investigations are needed to establish the correct diagnosis.

I suggest you to consult a General physician for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
