What Could Be The Reason For Prolonged Periods For Fifteen Days Having Started With Norethindrone As Birth Control?

I am a 23 year old female with two children, ages 2 and 6 months. I recently began norethindrone as birth control. I have been taking it for about 3 months (give or take). When I first took it, I almost immediately got my period. The period was shorter than usual and much more comfortable (less cramping). It was a relief to finally get my period back post partum. Then, when I was due to get my period the next cycle I was 16 days late! I was so afraid I would be pregnant because I had been late taking a couple pills (but never skipped). I also experience mood swings and nausea that made me feel I had become pregnant. I have now been bleeding for 14 days straight. It first began with tons of cramping and pain that felt like pressure bearing down from within my vagina. It made it difficult to walk. It eventually went away after several hours and brought on my period. The period tapered off, thinking I was finished but then came back with a vengeance. Day 12 me and my husand gave up and decided to have sex regardless, it was very messy and we had to stop because there was so much blood. First clear stuff came out, then blood, and then a bright red-pinkish jelly but NOT a blood clot. Then Day 13, I bled heavily soaking several pads within a short time of eachother. Today, Day 14 I have been passing clots all day long ranging in size from nickel to silver dollar sized. It is uncomfortable and I feel slightly cramping and bloated but not in pain. I am worried I may be having a miscarriage? But I took a preg test when I was 2 weeks late and it came up negative.

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Any hormonal preaparation taken to alter the normal physiology could give rise to abnormal kind of bleeding from the uterus due to the altered endometrium (lining of the uterus).

However Even though you are on a birth control pill/emergency pill, it is not a hundred percent guarantee against pregnancy. I would suggest you to go for a serum HCG estimation and an ultrasound of the abdomen if need be and if advised by your gynaecologist to confirm/exclude a pregnancy/retained products of conception causing this excess bleeding and clots. Further management of either a missed pregnancy or a pelvic infection will depend on the reports of the investigations and examination by a gynaecologist.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
