What Could Be The Reason For Low RBC Levels In A 94 Yr Old Suffering From Venous Stasis, Hypertension Etc.,?

Hello, I am a nursing student and my patient is a 94 year old female with Venous stasis, hypertension, valvular heart disease, severe aortic insufficiency, mod-severe MR, severe peripheral vascular disease, SIADH with chronic hyponatremia, thoracic aortic aneurysm, stress incontinence, and a history of left superficial femoral PTCA. Her RBC s are low and I can t pinpoint as to exactly why because she doesn t have anemia. Please help

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

The only cause of low RBC count in the absence of anemia is volume overload. RBC count done on a diluted blood will obviously show low RBC count/cumm of blood. Other cause can be age-related marrow hypoplasia.

I suggest that you get her Peripheral Blood smear examination done to detect hematopoietic abnormality.
