What Could Be The Reason For Having Sharp Pain And Tenderness In Heel?

tenderness in heel. sometimes sharp pain. occasionally painful to step at times. Taking tylenol to keep pain away at night so can sleep. Tenderness started month ago and have bruised back of heel several times. Pain mostly deep inside center of heel. No diabetes in family history. Husband takes medicine for gout. We eat relatively healthy. Not much meat and plenty of vegetables/fruits. I don't drink a lot of water during the day, but several glasses with lunch and supper. thanks. M

Hi there.

After reading your symptoms my opinion is that you have PLANTAR FASCITIS meaning inflammation of the fascia which covers the muscles of the heel.

Yes..you can get yourself tested for uric acid levels to rule out gout.

Treatment :
1. Start wearing soft sole shoes .
2. Contrast bath to your heels......meaning alternate dipping of heels in hot and cold water for 3 minutes each.
3. Anti inflammatory like etoricoxib
4. Heel stretching exercises
5. Wear Night dorsiflexion splints while sleeping

I hope my advice has helped
Good luck

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Shailja Puri's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
As per your history you are suffering from tenderness in the heel, occasional sharp pain and bruising of the heel in the past.
Is there history of trauma to the heel?
Tenderness and sharp pain is suggestive of soft tissue injury or nerve related pathology.
You need a clinical examination of the heel and some investigations.
A X-ray of the heel will look for the condition of the bone.
A MRI can be done if there is any suspicion of soft tissue injury.
You need to consult an orthopedician for clinical examination, investigations to plan management.
In addition, do get your fasting blood glucose levels to rule out diabetes mellitus.

Thanks and take care
