What Could Be The On And Off Upper Stomach Pain Just Below The Sternum ?

My son (14 yrs) has had off and on for the last 3 weeks upper stomach pain. Says it hurts just below his sternum at the top of his stomach. Walks hunched over when it hurts. Lasts for 3-5 hours, or when he sleeps and wakes its gone. He does eat fast sometimes, but I thought it might have been a touch of the flu, but now he s had it too often to be the flu. What do you think it could be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
The exact spot you have noted looks to be xiphisternum, a very small bone attached to the lowest part of the sternum. This can get inflamed and cause a pain , the way you have described for the site and character. Get this checked by a Surgeon. This is quite rare and may be difficult to diagnose.
