What could be the cause for getting the feeling of numbness in the left side of the chest and left portion of the body ?

Hi i m 20 years old, male. I ve been sick about 8 months now and have seen many specialists including two pulminologists, an endocrinologist , infectious diseases specialist, and an neurologist . No one seems to have a diagnosis, they were laying their cards on the Sarcoid table but the ACE test results apparently threw that out the window. I ve recently started getting a new symptom that i ve never had before in my life. It feels like the left side of my chest is asleep, like ones leg or arm falls asleep from laying in the wrong position, but this has been ongoing for three days now. I ve had a history of pneumonia but have recently had chest x-rays which seem to rule that out. I do sometimes have trouble breathing from the feeling, but apparently my oxygen levels are fine. Any ideas? Thanks to any and all that offer advice!

Hi there,
since all the tests the doctors could think of have yielded no positive findings, I suggest you let a psychiatrist also evaluate you. May be he could come out with some positive findings.

What causes full body numbness like this? Almost 3 weeks ago I felt an odd sensation on my left shoulder and after poking it a little I realized it was numb. It felt weird but didn t affect my day. The next day it was still there with no change until about 8:00pm where it started radiating from the patch on my shoulder, feeling like ice water was being poured over me. My entire left side was numb from head to toe, mouth and tongue included. Went to an ER and they ruled out stroke. But my whole body was going numb still. My reflexes and vision and strength are fine. The numbness gets worse after I fall asleep at night and wakes me frequently. But during the day it s slowly getting worse, it s my entire body, head to toe, my mouth and tongue and throat as well. I could still feel light touch when this started but the feeling has been getting less and less and I almost cannot feel anything at all. I keep having neck pain, some back pain and my shoulder hurts sometimes where the numbness started. I am unable to chew as my tongue and gums and mouth are all numb so I ve had to live off liquids and soft foods for the past few weeks. Had bloodwork done a few times and it came back normal. I ve seen multiple doctors and they can t figure it out. I m going to a neurology clinic in a week but I m worried I will keep getting worse and that I might be getting more symptoms by then. For a few days now I have felt like I m burning inside, like sitting under a heat lamp even though my skin is cool. And my fingers and toes have been involuntarily twitching occasionally. I m terrified that this will continue to get worse until I m paralyzed or it becomes permanent or something! I m only 17, and I ve been otherwise very healthy. What could be wrong? Small fibre peripheral neuropathy is the closest neurological problem I have found that match my symptoms even slightly but I don t want to just self diagnose from the internet.

Many symptoms over 3 years, MRI in 2008 was clear but could I still have brain tumour Hello, please help, 42 year old male. About 3 years ago, I started having numbness in my left arm and hand that would wake me up in the middle of the night. My first thought was a possible heart problem, and although my cholestorol is borderline high, the doctors said there was no immediate threat as long as I made changes to my diet. Over the following 3 years, these numbness episodes came and went. In March 2008, I had an MRI on my head and neck and no problems were found. The doctor thought it might be something to do with a nerve in my neck, but a series of x rays and tests have founf nothing there. In September this year, the episodes became more frequent and more severe - both arms and hands crippled when waking up in the middle of the night, taking several seconds to shake them back into life. I started having pains and a squeezing sensation in the sides of my chest, palpatations, and severe pains in my shoulder blades. During the day, my shoulder blades and arms would often ache. More heart tests were done, but again, nothing found, ECGs etc. Just more advice to watch my diet. December 3rd this year, I started having headaches. These would be all over my head, sometimes on the top, sometimes at the back, the sides, even the base of the skull. I also started having shooting pains in the right side of my head during the day, that last a second or so. And I kept waking up with numbness in both arms and now also leg cramps. 2 nights ago, I awoke at 3.30am with a terrible headache, it felt the whole front of my face was throbbing. I took an ibuprofen tablet to calm it down, but I had a headache (mainly at the back of my head) all day yesterday. This morning was worse than ever. I couldn t get to sleep, every time I lay down the headache would get worse, and also, I d feel twitching sensation in my right leg and arm, not like a fit, just one twitch each time I felt myself dozing off, to wake me up. And it felt like my whole body was throbbing. I still feel achey now, at the base of my skull. I m also suffering pain behind my eyes, particularly my right eye, and floating shapes when I look at a white screen or wall, or even a white cloudy sky or snow. The Doctor just says I need my eyes testing, I may need new glasses, as I use PCs and screens for work 10 hours a day. This started the same day as the headaches. Doctors say no, this isn t a brain tumour , and want to do more x-rays on my neck, because they say I have bad posture. But everything I read online suggests symptoms of brain tumour. This week I have started feeling nauseous, have missed evening meal 4 times in 7 nights because I just can t face food. My problem is this, if I had mild forms of this arm paralysis 3 years ago, and an MRI showed no tumours, could the worsening of this, and further symptoms, mean that there was something that they missed, which has now grown too big to ignore?

Here are the symptoms I have had/have been having: Around time of initial appointment with Dr. Caulkins (over two weeks ago) numb spot in back of head. Left eye stabbing pain, severe headache (for me atypical migraine does NOT include actual headache). Progressive numbness/tingling to pins and needles feeling. Started in left hand and back of head and face. Moved to right hand, feet. It is not always in the same place but consistently in my hands and back of head. Also has been in or is in hands, arms, feet, legs, back, chest, lips, face, back of head, top of head, never in stomach/core of body. Pain in finger tips, pain in toes, pain in lips, comes and goes inconsistent Several episodes where holding glass of water and feels like it weighs over 25lbs After working out the tingling, numbness is much much worse Warm water sort of takes it away and then after the warm water it increases sharply Trouble breathing, inhale not exactly painful maybe tight sensation hard to explain but can make me cough also not consistnet chest pain last two days comes and goes Light sensitive at times Visual issue worse again comes and goes but worse now Dizzy at times waking up with room not spinning full but skipping Incident bouncing with son on yoga ball stood up walked to another room and disoriented/dizzy walked into wall almost fell over had to sit down visual issues odd appearance too room hard to explain appearance Light headed fatigue Weighted limbs at times, like not attached to body or heavy hard to explain sensation Fells like body pulling to one side or other especially in mornings on a few occasions off balance like again sensation hard to explain unsteady on feet Headached almost constant for last few weeks almost like pressure in head with the tingling now I would like to know which of the following you think is most likely and if this require an ER visit due to the chest/breath thing. I have an appointment with a GP monday and a neurologist appointment to be schedule high priority. THey have rules out diabetes, MRI was clear, metabolic panel fine, blood work fine, cholesterol is fine, thyroid fine: Which of these do you think: 1)      Lyme- tick bite this would be late stage it was when steven was small on my head a.     Lyme myopericarditis can cause chest discomfort and difficulty breathing- can you have this late stage? yes 2)     Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy- difficulty breathing but not the same type of difficulty as mine 3)     Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus) (no rash?? Have raynauds: breathing/cough fits 4)     Sjögren s Syndrome: DR SKIDD THOUGHT THIS raynauds dry eyes- breathing maybe pericaridits really?? Is worse when I breath deep unsure about position change a.     Polymyositis caused by sjogrens- difficulty breath…pulmonary involvement in primary Sjögren’s syndrome is usually mild and very slowly progressive (seems like doesn’t fit!!!) 5)     Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MNN)- rare to cause issue breathing IS THIS CORRECT?? 6)     Amyloidosis a.     Can cause breathing issue but mine is not worse lying down more like worse leaning forward 7)     POEMS Syndrome (very rare unlikely)- not this rules this out cough breathing issue not likely

Hello, In November after visiting gym I ve got stuffed and 100% plugged nose, later developed chest caugh, pain, tiredness, thought I might have had pneumonia.. Took a lot of rest, lung teas, herbal tinctures, veget. and fruit juices etc. Lung Xray was OK. 2 weeks of antibiotics didn t clear it up. Up to now having smelly yellowish mucus coming out of my Bronchi s. Much worse after any kind of small walk, excercise. I am very concerned, it feels like infection in my chest that is not going away. Dr. ordered spirometry and metacholine tests, that suggested mild Asthma. Recommended cortison puffers only. I gave sample of yellow mucus - came out as inflamation only. What should I do next? So far I stayed off work last 3 months, taking care of myself, it seems getting slowly better until I go for a little walk when symptoms come back big time. What other test should be done to find out the real cause? I feel, that if it is not cleared, it will be getting worse over time. I used to do a lot of sports here as well as in Europe since childhood, until 3.5 months ago, and I am very worried about the future of this medical issue. Thank You, Radka

Hi, I have had UTI like symptoms for 5 years. I have had many, many cultures - all neg. I have also had a bladder ultrasound - again normal, I have tried creams for dermatitis etc. I just read recently that Latent TB can show symptoms of a UTI - 5 years ago - when symptoms first appeared, I was working in an orphanage in Central Asia (ex-soviet state) when drug resistant TB was rife and visiting children regularly in a TB hospital, so I have definitely been exposed. I had terrible pneumonia last year which took a long time to diagnose, and for a while they suspected TB but it didn t show up in my lungs. Could it still possible cause for my UTI - is it worth getting checked?

Hello: I have quite a concern and I will be going to the general doctor tomorrow for the physical examination. First a little about me, I am a 28 year old male. I am currently a 2nd year medical student in guadalajara but live in the United States. For about the past three weeks I ve noticed my stool has become progressively softer (for every single stool). Initially the smell and color was normal. For the past two days however the stool has become yellowish. What brings me concern was that my last stool passed was very soft, a darker yellow color, smelly, and much of the food I had eaten the night before was not digested. I have checked my blood pressure and it is normal. Heart rate is 70. No fever, or general feeling of malaise. No pain at all. No significant weight loss or fatigue. I ve had fellow students check for fluid wave and there is some movement on the other side but it s not a very fluid movement (is the opposite side not supposed to move AT ALL? Or can it move a little but should not be liquid movement?). Currently I am taking a larger does of Ibuprofen prescribed by a doctor here because about three weeks ago a painless non-inflamed lump was felt underneath the skin slightly anterior to the angle of the mandible. I have been taking the Ibuprofen for about 5 days and the lump has not gone away. In the past (5 years ago) I have had an H. Pylori infection with a subsequent ulcer in the duodenum. Only medication was used to treat the infection/ulcer. No followup was done afterwards. Beginning around the same time as the ulcer I have had recurrent bouts of hemorrhoids. Blood could be seen on wiping. Currently this is happening as well. About 8 years ago I suffered from a pneumonia but do not remember if it was viral or bacterial. I ve also had a pretty long history of right sided feeling in my abdomen. I would say the feeling is located directly on the line that would separate the upper and lower quadrant, slightly above the umbilicus. The feeling was never painful. I know the doctor I visit tomorrow will get to do the necessary physical tests to see if there is any significant pathology but I need to hear what other things it could be. The doctors here usually shoo us away because they think we are too young to get anything serious or they assume that just because we read a chapter in pathology we automatically think we suffer every disease in the textbook. Anyway, I know living in Mexico currently will expose me to certain bugs. However the course of those from what I know would not cause a 3 week history of progressively looser stools and the yellowness/malabsorption for the past two days. Any suggestions/comments of what it may be is more than welcome.

My friend just got out of the hospital, he was being treated for pneumonia and asthma. His complaints include the feeling of being choked, phlegm in the throat that s hard to expel and he has to drink water so some phlegm will come out and whenever he has the choking feeling, he also gets dizzy and increased heartbeat. Together with this, he also has hoarse voice right now, and loss of smell. He is 27 years old. He did endoscopy and the doctor found that thick mucus in his throat developed. He then prescribed Omeprazole and a nasal spray for the nose. However my friend is not very confident with the ENT doctor s diagnosis. With the choking feeling, he feels something is wrong. My question is, with the feeling of being choked and just generally different feeling , is he at risk for esophageal cancer? He smoked before (non-consistent in college), and very rarely drink alcohol.
