What Causes White Patches On Face Of An Infant?

My 4 month old son is getting white patches on his face. He is a premature baby nd was very fair when born but after 18 days of stay in inqubator and also with phototherapy he lost his colour. Since last two weeks the white patches started showing up first near his lips nd gradually on his other part of his face. The baby is taking formula feed(Nan-1) Kindly advice, what it could be. Im attaching the photo of the effected area Regards Gayatri

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A common cause of skin lesions in newborns is seborrhoeic dermatitis. This is generally a self-limiting condition and there is nothing to worry about. You just need to apply vaseline twice a day and if this is not helping enough you can apply a ketoconazole cream twice a day and vaseline in the midday.
If he is not better in 2-3 weeks or he develops new symptoms you will need to have him checked with a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and decide on furhter treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
