What Causes White Patches In Mouth?

My father has white-yellowish patches in his mouth, actually in his cheeks for about 5-6 years. He is 51 years old. Sometimes he has lesions in his mouth, but not very often. He thinks that he has leukoplakia. He used to smoke but gave up 14 years ago. He also has dentures. Does he have an oral cancer or something precancerous? If yes, what stage? If not, what is his condition? Thank you so much.

Hi dear ,

The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as leukoplakia as you also mention in query . There can be many reasons for leukoplakia to occur like smoking ( but your father already give up long ago ) and continue irritation to mucosa due to any dental appliance . So the probable reason for this is denture that your father wear . Sometimes things like sharp edges , poor hygiene of denture and poor oral hygiene cause leuplakia . So , i would suggest you to consult dentists for proper examination to find out exact cause and to rule out causes like oral thrush and oral cancer .. Doctor may grind sharp edges or give a new denture . Doctor may also order biopsy . For now maintain proper oral hygiene , do warm saline rinses several times a day and do antiseptic mouthwash rinses ( listrine ) twice a day .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
