What Causes Weight Gain And Frequent Bowel Movements In A Child?

My ten year old son has had issues with being backed up and as soon as he is done eating he has to have a bowl movement. A couple of years ago they confirmed this my an xray. He still does that but over the past two years he has become overweight. Could this be from the same issue?

Hi,

It is very unlikely that both frequent bowel movements and weight gain will go hand in hand unless it's due to some medication intake (eg. steroid intake).

Your son has two issues 1. increased gastro-colic reflex ( passing stools after eating) and 2. overweight.

Increased gastrocolic reflux might be due to infections, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease.

Overweight may be due to decreased physical activity or increased food intake.

I would suggest you keep a check over the diet and physical activity, which would help in reducing weight.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
