I have a 6 year old grandson who has had very watery light green diarrhea for 4 days. I took him to the ER they said the xray showed a lot of gas but only gave him medicine for nausea and he hasn t even had a problem with that! no vomiting and hes fine other than the diarrhea! fever was only 99. I cant figure out wkat is going on? He has been out of school for 3 days and I don t want him to miss anymore. Is there anything I can give him to help? hes 6 and 52 pounds. DeniseMeeks
Green diarrhea is a common finding when a child has diarrhea. This is due to the bile content in the stool that is not absorbed due to fast transit of the bowel so it does not indicate anything serious. If the child has fever or blood or mucus in the stools or signs of dehydration (fatigue, not taking many fluids, peeing less, dry tongue, sunken eyes), he would need to see a doctor and take more treatment.
At the moment just make sure he drinks plenty, oral rehydration solutions that can be taken over the counter in the pharmacy are of better help to substitute water and electrolytes and also make sure he rests. A viral infection might take from 3-5 days and rarely goes up to 7 days- this is the normal outcome and needs to be given its time. Tablets for diarrhea are not generally indicated in children so just make sure to keep him hydrated and rest well.
If no improvement in 2-3 days or any worsening or any signs I mentioned above please see a doctor.
I hope this answers your query. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
