What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea While Travelling?

Wife (48) just arrived from a four day (car) travel to NewYork (we live in virginia). about 3 hours after arrival she began to feel ill (stomach)... and has subsequently vomited and experienced diarrhea. She has pretty well emptied her stomach... still feels she could vomit again and is still feeling stomach discomfort. (has not vomited for about one hour (current time: 04:00) No blood in regurgitate or stool . Slight fever (clammy forehead) and feels tired. She s eaten (today) foods that others with her have also eaten but I ve not heard of any others with same symptoms . No complaints about any other pain or discomfort. ** 130/81 BPM 79 :: My thinking: she s picked up a virus from contact with others --- just left a funeral -- many family / friend/ children contact in the past 72 hours.

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hello!
I have been through your question.
According the symptoms that your wife has I think this is gastroenteritis (traveller's diarrhoea based on your history). Traveller's diarrhoea is diarrhoea that develops during, or shortly after, travel abroad and is caused by eating food, or drinking water, contaminated by germs including bacteria, viruses and parasites.
Gastroenteritis is caused by viral infections (rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus) but can also be bacterial in origin (e.coli, campylobacter, salmonella). There are many ways gastroenteritis can be spread like contact with someone who has the virus, contaminated food or water, unwashed hands after going to the bathroom. In most cases traveller's diarrhoea causes a mild illness as your wife has and symptoms clear within 3 to 4 days. But to be sure that is a viral gastroenteritis or not your wife should meet an Infectious Disease specialist, doing a physical examination, stool sample, full blood count, azotemia/creatinemia. During this time she should drink a lot of water and tea take tresol and probiotics and if need it antibiotics prescribe by ID doctor (based on your lab data).
I hope my answer help you. I wish you a quick recovery.
