What Causes Vertigo While On Metformin, Insulin And Simvastatin?

I AM ON MANY MEDS, FOR DIABETES (METFORMIN, ACTOS, AND INSULIN), HEART (SIMVASTATIN AND BABY ASPIRIN), BLOOD PRESSURE (ATENOLOL), AND I TAKE PLAVIX AND PROTONIX FOR STENTS I HAD PLACED AND BARRETS ESOPHAGAL DISEASE. MY QUESTION IS, CAN ANY OF THESE MEDS PRODUCE THE VERTIGO I HAVE. I HAVE HAD A 3 HR DIZZINESS TEST AND AN MRI OF THE BRAIN, ALL THE MRI SHOWED WAS SIGNS OF A STROKE. I HAD MIGRAINES AS A CHILD BUT NONE SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. I HAD EXERCISES FOR THE VESTIBULAR WITH NO HELP. I HAVE TINNITUS AND SOME HEARING LOSS. MY NEXT MOVE IS TO SEE AN ENT FOR SINUSES AND CONSTANT STUFFINESS. THE VERTIGO AFFECTS ME ONLY WHEN I AM WALKING AND STOP, I FEEL LIKE I AM STILL MOVING. THE CRYSTALS ARE IN LINE, RESULT OF THE 3 HR TESTING AT THE SLU DIZZINESS CENTER (ST. LOUIS, MO.)

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Vertigo is a symptom, rather than a condition itself and treatment depends on the right cause. You should see your GP if you have persistent signs of vertigo or it keeps coming back. Causes of vertigo may include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, migraines – severe headaches, labyrinthitis – an inner ear infection. Medicines, such as prochlorperazine and some antihistamines, can help in the early stages or most cases of vertigo. Also, we recommend: do simple exercises to correct your symptoms, sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows, avoid bending down to pick up items, avoid extending your neck – for example, while reaching up to a high shelf.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
