What Causes Variation In Heart Beat?

Have been having trigeminal, bigeminal beats followed by normal sinus rhythm over a period of hours.At other times skipped beats or extra beats. Am on Bisoprolol, klonopin and valium. Off and on over a prolonged period of years with varying s.ymptoms as described above. Have been physically active playing tenis 2 to 3 times a week. Present age 91. Symptoms may vary from one day to next. No shortness of breath or chest pain. Appreciate any recommendatons.

Hello,

However, considering your age, it's important that we rules out ischemia as a cause of these. So you should be evaluated with echo, ECG, stress cardiac test, etc. These are increased by smoking, excessive alcohol intake, excessive thyroid hormone levels, caffeine etc. You should get a thyroid profile done to rule out hyperthyroidism. You all need echo and If not done, cardiac stress test like stress thallium or CT coronary angiography.

So overall, the likelihood of serious issues is less, but needs to be evaluated. The treatment for us this is beta blockers like Bisoprolol and if not helping them either the dose should be increased or calcium channel blockers or anti-arrhythmic drug may be added. So you should this prescribed.
