What Causes Vaginal Bleeding During Intercourse?

Last Friday I had sex twice (about three hours apart), first time nothing abnormal but second time, after about 15 minutes or so, I noticed that I was bleeding. We didn't stop immediately, and at the end there was a fair amount of blood (enough to make a 10cm ish stain on the sheets). It had been two months since I had sex last, no STIs as I was checked while with with my previous partner and this was the first time I'd slept with someone new since then. Also I bled another time with a previous partner, went to see doctor who couldn't see anything obvious. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Bleeding during or after intercourse may be due to partial rupture of hymen, rough sex, blunt trauma or tissue injury, vaginal infection or dryness (lack of lubrication).

Most of time, this type of bleeding stops automatically within 2-3 days without medical intervention.

2) Medicine like Tranexamic acid can be taken for 3 days to arrest bleeding temporarily. Use proper lubrication during sex.

3) Lastly, I suggest you to consult with gynecologist if bleeding continues more than 3 days. Pelvic examination may be required with speculum.

One ultrasound scan (TVS) is advisable to detect uterine or cervical pathology (if any). Do one pap smear test also.

Maintain genital hygiene properly. Wish your good health. Good luck.
