What causes unusual smell, redness and swelling in the left nostril?

Hi, for about 5 weeks, I have been having mild infection symptoms come and go in my left nostril. The outside of my nose is a little swollen and red. I know I overdry my nose with tissues , but it is difficult not to as I have had a runny nose. I noticed about a week ago that my left nostril has a bad rotten smell . My right is normal. What should I do?

As per your complain unusual smell from nose along with redness and swelling can be due to bacterial infection leading to inflammation and bad smell. There can also be hair follicle infection inside the nostril. Other cause can be trauma to the nasal lining caused due to excessive sniffing causing secondary infection.

I would suggest you to consult an ENT Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination will be done. He can advise you antibiotics along with anti -inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen. You can also do saline nasal irrigations and cool compresses over the nostril. Avoid sniffing the nose too vigorously.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
