What Causes Ulcers In The Mouth And Tongue While On Prednisone And Percocet?

I had back surgery in January. I have been taking prednisone, percocet and soma or diazepam. My tongue is very sore, I have mouth sores and my mouth is very dry. Could it be the medication that I have or am taking? I have finished the prednisone after taking it for about 16 days. I take only 1/2 tablet of percocet as needed for pain and 1/4 pill of 5 mg diazepam to help me sleep. I am very uncomfortable and purchased some
Act losenges today which helped some but not enough. I also have some Oragel pain relief mouth rinse. I want to get rid of the problem though, not treat it. Should I stop all pain medication and muscle relaxers?
Thank you.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Yes, the soreness in mouth along with dryness and ulcers is appearing to be due to the side effects of medication..
Soreness in mouth can be secondary to dry mouth that can cause thinning of mucosa and inflammation..
Stopping the intake of medication or reducing the dose shall be decided by your Surgeon it as he knows your history and present clinical condition..
In case if the healing is appropriate then you can stop medication after the consent of the Surgeon..
For now to get symptomatic relief you should continue applying oragel or can Gargle with mouthwash containing Lignocaine.
You can get mouth gels like Oralbase to relieve dryness..
Avoid regular mouthwash especially those containing alcohol as they have drying effect in mouth.
You can Gargle with methlycellulose containing mouthwash like Biotene as they relieve dry mouth..
Drink plenty of water..
Take Probiotics like Yogurt..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
