What Causes Tremors In The Body While Sleeping?

I am a 35 year old female and for the last few months I have been having myoclonic like jerks. The only problem is I don’t have only have them when I’m falling asleep. I have jerks in my hands, neck, body etc. any time I’m tired. It’s so bad my 9 year old son asked me why I was jerking so much. Also I am tired a lot so tired I could almost fall asleep standing up. It is almost impossible to keep myself awake. The worst times are early in the mornings between 8 and 11 and early evening between 6 and 8. Then I can’t sleep. I am up half the night sometimes until 330 am. Also when I’m driving my brain will just zone out. I half to shake my head to refocus or pinch myself. Recent labs including electrolytes and vitamin levels is fine. I don’t know what the problem could be and I dislike going to neurologists.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I have noted your symptoms and they are suggestive of myoclonic jerks. Even though you dislike going to neurologists, there is no other option. You need to see a neurologist and undergo EEG test. If there are epileptiform discharges, you would be started on anti-epileptic drugs. The best drugs are sodium valproate or levetiracetam (for myoclonic jerks). Proper treatment can bring about a positive change in your daily life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
