Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Dear is he on ventilator?? or only with oxygen giving through mask??
If he is intubated and coughing may be due to he may developed pneumonia or CO2 wash-out.
If he is on oxygen mask with drowsiness may be due to CO2 narcosis or metabolic encephalopathy or with aspiration pneumonia etc.
Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
