What Causes Tiredness, Cold Sensation And Weight Gain Despite Being On Levothyroxine?

ok..I have hypothroidism..my last blood test said 4.3 which is considered slightly high .. since then about 6wks has passed..im tired all the time ...im cold when others are not...i caint sleep well...my diet has not changed ...but what has changed is my weight ; like an extra 12 kilos in 4mnths.. End of 2014 my medication was doubled ; I used to take 50mgrams of goldsheild LEVOTHROXINE..Since then i ve been told to take 100mgrams daily...I do not feel right ...i have no focus ..and im getting myself confused all the time ...so much so im getting shitty at myself...I have just been back to the docter to have a full blood screan...I just feel that i need to see a specialist as I m having high levels of thyroid yet my simptons are more for a hyperthroid...which is what i started with at age 27...By the time I was 30 it had flipped and gone the other way...i am now 39 turning forty... also i have family history of early menopose; I am wondering if that may have something to do with it; there for i am being tested for that too...so if thats not the case...is it simply to much medication...My levels had been steady for 7yrs and now they are not...I don t feel right Please could you show me some light on this... General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Melanie,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Healthcare magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concerns.

All the symptoms you describe are typically found in hypothyroid condition.
-Tiredness/ Fatigue
-Increased sensitivity to cold,
-Unexplained weight gain despite no dietary change,
-Memory problems, depression, or problems concentrating etc.

Your TSH level of 4.3, as you mention is considered slightly high, and it is increased in order to stimulate your thyroid gland to increase the production of T4 and T3 hormones.

This means that your Levothyroxine dosage is not enough, and your doctor has to increase it. After your dosage is changed, you will have another blood test 6 to 8 weeks later to make sure the dose is right for you.

Hope I helped with my answer. For further concerns or follow up questions, feel free to ask again.

Wishing you good health,
Dr. Ina
