What Causes The Hearing Of A Swooshing-thumping Sound In My Head?

I keep hearing a swoshing--thumping sound in my head, mostly around my left ear and side of my head. Also on the right side but not as much. I was going to talk to my Primary care doctor recently and I mentioned it to his assistant. She said she had the problem and it was her thyroid. She looked at my record and said my thyroid was alright. I forgot to bring it up to the doctor and she must not have written it down because he didn t bring it up. It s been going on about three months. What else besides my thyroid could cause this noise?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tinnitus can be caused because of many reasons apart from a thyroid disorder. It can be caused because of a problem in the ear like perforated eardrum, Meniere's disease or sensorineural hearing loss.

There are many systemic conditions that can cause tinnitus like high blood pressure, anemia, diabetes, vascular disorders. It is important to know the source of your tinnitus to treat it. I would advise you to get yourself checked by an ENT for proper diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma.Amman
