What Causes Tinnitus Of Ear With Cold And Cough?

I have tinnitus from my left ear and had it for some time now, but it is at a fairly low level (say level 1) and I have learned to cope with. I have recently had a bad head cold and my tinnitus as increased to a higher level (say level 3) and it it giving me some problems. My doctor checked out my ears and said that I have an infection and prescribed Doxycycline Antibotics. During the 7 day course of taking the tablets the level of tinnitus as been varying from low to high in like a daily cycle. I thought that this was due to the antibotics and it would gradually reduce after finishing the course. When I finished the course I thought that the tinnitus would go back to level 1 but it is at level 3 most of the time now and I finished the course 5 days ago and it is driving me crazy.

Q1. How long after taking the antibotics should I allow for getting it out of my system.

Q2. Do you think that the increased level was do to the eye infection and will it reduce after some time.

In acute case of common cold tinnitus is mostly due to blockage of our auditory tube and thus decrease middle ear cavity drainage. But if the course is for a longer duration then middle ear infection..i.e otitis media(infectious or non infectious) is considered. In your case your middle is not being drained and aired properly. That would be possible by taking mucolytic agent, regular warm water vapour inhalation through nose, valsalva maneuver ( forceful expiration by closing the nares and mouth orifice). It generally takes 1week in case of simple common cold but may take upto 3months or longer if otitis media present.
And lastly, there is little evidence of association eye infection with this type of manifestation.
