What Causes Tingling Sensation And Numbness In The Fingers?

Hi! I feel like I need confirmation of what I assume is going on with me. Here is the story. My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease in October, at age 64. Immediately following his diagnosis, I became insanely anxious. I developed heart palpitations, rapid breathing, muscle spasms and twitches, as well as super tight muscles. Since then, as soon as I feel a twitch in a muscle, my anxiety sky rockets. I have been noticing that, specifically with my ring finer and pinky finger on my left hand, that I have tingling, numbness, and if I stretch my arm I notice those two fingers quiver a tiny bit. I am just so nervous, and hyper aware of my body, and every little feeling or movement. Logically I know that Parkinson s has many symptoms as it is a neurological disorder, but I guess I need to hear a doctor say the same thing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Parkinson's is not common in young adults. Though it has a genetic predisposition... it is less common when there is a single sufferer in near relation.

As you correctly think Parkinson's is a neurological disorder with many fold symptoms... & if at all you are doubtful about you being a patient, you should be in regular touch with a neurophysician... let him or her analyse your symptoms & decide about the possibility (there is no point in getting nervous with baseless fear of the disease). In case of doubt, he would advise for a specialized CT scan (DAT scan) which supports the doubtful diagnosis of the disease & treatment would be started.

As per your symptoms of tingling sensation in ring & pinky fingers on stretching of arm... I would suggest an X-ray/MRI of cervical spine & neck point out compression of the nerve supplying these fingers. The problem can be well managed with an orthopedic surgeon's help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
