What Causes Tightness Around Lower Abdomen?

My husband has this sensation of tightening around his lower abdomen. What may be causing it? He suspects his hemorrhoids are inflamed because he feels something is blocking the opening of his rectum. However, he cant feel with his fingers anything that is protruding outside. Pleas help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The tightening sensation around anal area is suggestive of rectal muscle spasms. It is caused by spasms of the muscles around the rectal area. Patients may feel episodic tightness or pain in the rectal area. The episode may be from several seconds to several minutes. The underlying cause of spasms is unknown. People who had injuries in the past, infections, with anal or rectal disorders are at risk of rectal spasms.

You may try following measures to relieve the spasms. Take oral magnesium capsules or ionic magnesium dietary supplements. Low magnesium level in the body is associated with more rectal spasms. You may also use Epsom salt (contains magnesium) to add to the water when you take a bath. Massaging or applying castor oil to the rectal area may also help to relax rectal muscles and to relieve the spasms.

If the above-mentioned measures do not help, see your doctor for the prescription of medications (e.g. calcium channel blockers).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Malik
