What Causes Throat Tightness ?

I feel a tightness in my throat. I don t feel any other sensations. I can breathe, drink and eat just fine, but it feels like there is a relaxing in my throat to where it feels tight. I have gained weight this year due to some antidepressants I ve taken for anxiety. I suppose it could be due to snoring. I don t know. What do you think are some of the reasons for these feelings? Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most common reasons for feeling tightness in throat without any other symptoms and with history of being on anti-depressants can be one of the following:
- Tightness of muscles that is spasm due to inflammation
- Inflammation of the Hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage and the structures nearby
- Anxiety, stress, depression contribute to all such factors
- An actual swelling in the throat

Hence, I would advise you to consult an ENT surgeon for endoscopy of ENT. MRI of neck to see for any actual swelling. Tests of blood for hypothyroidism, X-ray of chest. Rule out GERD by upper GI Endoscopy. Counselling if all the tests, investigations are normal and then to consult your psychiatrist for proper management of your psychological issues. If there is any organic lesion as discussed above then a specific treatment will help. Snoring may be related by causing extra efforts by muscles causing swelling and the feeling that you have.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
