What Causes Throat Pain And White Coating On The Tongue While Having Strep Throat?

Hi, I was diagnosed with strep threat yesterday morning without any tests being done. I was prescribed with penicillin and it's been about 34 hours since I started the antibiotic. My fever has reduced but my left tonsil is covered in white and is still painful to swallow - it's hard to eat. I was wondering how long it takes for the white stuff to go away and when can I expect relief from the pain? I'm taking ibrophen which helps a bit but when it wears off the pain comes back. I've also been gargling salt water throughout the day. My throat felt okay about midday but now it's hurting again and I feel nauseous. Was going to try betadine gargle tonight, but if no improvement should I go back to the doctor?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain white pustules on tonsils with pain on swallowing seems to be probably due to a severe case of bacterial throat infection known as Strep Throat..
White pustules are pus pockets that further confirms towards bacterial infection..

As it seems that the infection is severe it can take for atleast 4 to 5 days to resolve..

For confirmation consult an Otolaryngologist or an ENT expert and get evaluated..
He can do investigations like Throat swab culture can help in diagnosis..

You can be advised:
-Antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection..
-Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain. -----Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
-You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat..
-Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine..
-Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water..
-Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity..
-Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
