What Causes Throat Infection After Recovering From Pneumonia?
For past 18months since contracting pneumonia (supposedly cured with antibiotics) I ve had an ongoing throat/chest infection which is not cured with antibiotics. Blood tests etc can not identify any infection. A visit to an EN&T specialist failed to identify the problem.I am always clearing my throat of a clear/white sputum.I am finding this rather debilitating and fear that I now have a weakened immune system.I await your advice.Thanks,GD.
One of the common reasons for the presence of mucus at the back of the throat would be a post nasal drip of mucus. There are different causes of post nasal drip but the most common cause would be an allergic response, e.g. to dust, foods, medication etc.
Using an antihistamine-decongestant combination such as Claritin D or Benadryl D, Allegra D would help. This can be combined with a nasal spray though you do not have nasal symptoms eg Avamys, Nasonex, Rhinocort.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
General & Family Physician
