What Causes Thinning Of The Hair In A Diabetic?

I have recently noticed a dramatic thinning of my hair. I have taken a vitamin supplement which provides for 100% of my daily requirement for biotin. I also had my thyroid checked and it is within normal range. I just turned 62, exercise 5-6x/wk and have my type 2 diabetes under control without medication. A1C stable at 6.0-6.6

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Considering your medical history of type 2 DM and your age, although your vitamin intake is as per requirement, I suspect iron deficiency and protein deficiency as a cause of thinning of hair. Get your haemoglobin levels checked to rule out anemia. Consume egg whites of 3 to 7 eggs daily, strictly avoiding the yellow. If you are vegetarian, sprouts are the next best option to meet your protein requirement.

Remember to consume plenty of water while on high protein diet or else it will take a toll on your kidney function. Continue on your medication and exercise. Add stress relaxation techniques like meditation to your routine. Get adequate sleep. In 4 to 6 weeks you will see results not only in the quality of your hair but also in your overall health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepti Shivakumar
