What Causes Thick Brown Discharge After 5 Months Post Pregnancy?

I m five months PP and breatfeeding my baby. I haven t had a period yet and in the last two days I started having a thick dark brown (no red at all) mild/moderate flow discharge. What could this be? I haven t had intercourse at all since my c-section and I m not on any type of contraptive or medication.

Hi,

While breastfeeding the baby, serum prolactin levels will be elevated which can affect the reproductive hormonal balance and can lead to irregularity in menstrual cycles. Sometimes that can present as intermenstrual spotting. Usually after delivery, in breastfeeding women in around 6 months menstrual cycles can start.

So, this brown discharge me in turn into regular menstrual flow also. As there is no possibility of pregnancy in your case, you can wait and watch. If the brown discharge converts into the regular menstrual flow, possibly from next month you can get regular menstrual periods. Is brown discharge persists for days together and irregularity in menstrual cycles occur, you may need to get evaluated.

In that case, please consult your gynecologist once, get examined and undergo an ultrasound, depending on the findings further treatment can be planned.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
