What Causes The Increase In WBC Count Over A Period Of Time?

My white blood cell count continues to increase. In Feb 2011 it was 7.7 in Jul 2013 jumped to 9.1, in Sept 2013 11.3, 13.6 in Dec 2013, 12.2 in March 2013 and now 14.1 in June. What could be the cause? At what point should I make an appt. to see a hemotologist? Thanks

The WBC count is not a static number and will be different each time you measure it. It can go up with infections, stress, and other conditions. Many other factors including the rest of the blood count need to be taken into consideration before seeing a hematologist. What I recommend right now is that you go over these numbers and any other bloodwork with your regular doctor or whoever is having you get this bloodwork. You can report any symptoms that may be related to these abnormalities, and the doctor can do a physical examination. Such an evaluation will point towards a certain diagnosis that your doctor may be able to treat, or s/he may feel it's necessary to refer you to a hematologist (or other specialist depending on findings) at that point.
