What Causes Swollen Upper Lip After Using Clindamycin With Benzoyl Peroxide?

My son is 14 and is using clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide prescribed by our dermatologist. He has been using it for 2 weeks and we are noticing a little improvement. However , this morning he woke up with a swollen upper lip. He had a pimple pop up yesterday and he "spot treated it" with the gel. The pimple is not on his lip but about midway between lip and nose. Wondering if it's the medication that caused the swelling. We talked to the dermatologist nurse and they recommended that if we feel like it was from the med to discontinue but since he has been using it on his back face for two weeks it may me unlikely the swelling is from the gel.....

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swollen lip can be probably due to Allergic Angioedema and the most common cause can be the medications that you he is applying for pimples while it can also be due to allergic reaction to any food or medication..

I would suggest you that he should take anti allergics like Levocetrizine or Allegra for reducing swelling and do cool compresses over the lip..

You can also consult an Allergist or a General Physician and get a blood test done to rule out for the cause of the swelling and will be treated accordingly..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
