For the past 2 weeks, my tongue has been irritated and swollen and all the taste buds all over my tongue are swollen also. I'm not sure what happened. This has never happened to me before. It feels raw and rough like when you've burnt it drinking a hot liquid but it's been over 2 weeks and has not gotten better. Please help. Do you know what this could be and how I can relieve my symptoms. Thanks.
Your symptoms seems consistent with an inflammatory condition of the mouth known as Burning Mouth Syndrome..
It can be due to a number of commonly occurring conditions like Dry mouth, allergic reaction to any medicine or food, oral infections like Thrush, acid reflux, nutritional deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, hormonal imbalances like Hypothyroidism and diabetes etc.
You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and treatment of underlying cause can resolve the symptoms..
As of now you can gargle with a numbing mouthwash, take multivitamin supplements, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and suck on ice pops for reducing inflammation.. Avoid hot and spicy food and chew sugarfree chewing gums as it will stimulate saliva flow..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
