What Causes Swollen Itchy Spots On Hands After Cleaning Shrimps?

From heading and cleaning shrimp, my husband was stuck by the shrimp heads and now has red, itchy spots and his hands are swollen. Someone said you can get shrimp poisoning from handling the shrimp. NEVER happened before and he has lived on the coast all of his life.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved husband's swollen itchy spots on his hands.

Apparently he has developed an allergic reaction to shrimps while handling handling them.

Allergic reaction to shrimps is unpredictable, sometimes occurring long after a person has handled & eaten the shrimps and has shown no other symptoms.

Allergic reaction to shrimp may also become more severe with each exposure.
So, he must try to avoid direct exposure to the shrimps.

A dermatologist consultation is recommended to confirm the allergy to shrimp by certain lab tests like Skin prick test and allergen-specific IgE antibody test or radioallergosorbent (RAST) test.
Meanwhile he can use the following for the relief of his symptoms:

Hydrocortisone 1% cream to be applied to the affected areas twice
Oral Antihistamine (levocetrizine) to reduce as rash and itchiness.

Hope to have answered your query.
