What Causes Swollen Foot, Ankle And Calf When Diagnosed With Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?

My client started off with her left foot swelling. Then the ankle, and calf. Now it is up to her knee. She says it feels like the bones are bruised. Her leg aches. Also it goes red and feels hot. Now her right foot is starting to swell. She does suffer with PSC. She is 87 years old. Her heart is apparently ok.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling of the legs can be due to different conditions. Since she has a history of PSC, she may want to consider liver function tests such abnormal function of the liver is one of the possible causes.

In addition, kidney disease, side effect of medication and varicose veins are other possible causes of bilateral leg swelling if heart disease has been ruled out by investigations.

I hope this helps
