Hello
Since you are a known case of diabetes ( under control ) from last 6 years .
In diabetic cases swelling over ankles may be due to following reaosn.
1 Chronic renal failure , as this is the most common cause and diabetic are very prone to this.
Diagnosis can be confirmed by Ultrasound of kidneys and urine examination complete . Also get in blood for urea , uric acid and SERUM CREATININE.
2 Congestive heart failure is another most common cause . Diagnosis can be confirmed by ECHOCARDIOGRAM .
3 Anemia or hypoproteinemia may be the another reason so get in blood for hemogram and protein analysis.
Since you are a diabetic so consult a diabetologist and get his opinion.
Good luck.
