What Causes Swelling In The Tonsils?

I know this isn t a legitimate source, but I m sort of desperate. Two days ago I developed what I thought was strep throat. My tonsils were swollen, it felt like I had razor blades in my mouth when I swallowed, and my uvula and the far back of my throat is covered in white...junk. I ve tried scraping it off (gently) and it bleeds...it s pretty awful. The white gunk hasn t really spread much past my uvula....it s not out of control like most of the pictures of Candida/Thrush I ve seen. Also my glands are really really swollen (I look like a bullfrog), and I have all the symptoms of a general cold (congestion, lots of phlegm, difficulty breathing, headache). I have no allergies, and am in fairly good health. The doctors did a strep test, but both the rapid test and the culture came up negative. I m on antibiotics (a Z Pack) to try to bring down the swelling in my tonsils, and although it has come down a bit, it s been 48 hours and I m still pretty sick. The white gunk in my mouth hasn t disappeared/decreased, and I m sort of concerned. The doctor told me to wait 3-4 days before coming in, and it s driving me craaazy!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Your symptoms seem to be related to tonsillitis which is an infection of the tonsils.
I suggest to continue with the antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor.
I also suggest to take anti-inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen.
I recommend to rest and drink a lot of liquids.
After the treatment I suggest another examination by your doctor to see if the antibiotics has been effective.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
