What Causes Swelling In The Tonsils After Tongue Piercing?

I recently got my tongue pierced (5 days ago) and it's been healing okay, I suppose. I've been taking care of it well and "eating" a lot of ice to reduce the swelling. The day after I got it done, my tonsils have gotten swollen and I figured it was because I was sucking on too much ice. The second day, my tonsils have gotten really swollen and had some pus on them, which I took for tonsillitis because I have it at least 2 times a year. I wonder, can tonsillitis cause sepsis (bacteria entering the wound on my tongue)? Also, the under part of my tongue (not salivatory glands, just tongue) is really swollen. Could all this be due to the piercing and not an infection or something worse?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well, if you have pus over tonsils then it is probably due to bacterial throat infection leading to Tonsillitis..
Yes, it can also cause your tongue to become more painful and swollen..
Swollen underside of tongue where you have got piercing done is due to inflammation post piercing..
You should take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin or Augmentin [Amoxicillin + Clavulanate Potassium] to reduce infection and along with it take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen.
Do salt water rinses and also you can gargle with Magic Mouthwash or any other antiseptic mouthwash..
Avoid spicy and irritant foods..
Do not suck ice and just apply cool compresses under the tongue..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
