What Causes Swelling In The Thyroid Gland?

Sir,
I have been suffering from Hyperthyroid since 1999, till 2008 i took anty thyroid drugs, in 2008 i have gone for RAI therapy, at that time my thyroid gland shrink and hormones came to normal levels.
but now in 2011 my thyroid gland is swelling, it became bigger, please suggest me shall i go for another dose of RAI or anty thyroid drugs. Recently i consulted doctor who gave RAI to me in 2008, i explained him my gland became bigger, it is swelling and i am suspecting it is like goiter but he said no problem with that it will shrink. He prescribed only 10mg inderal tablets one morning and one evening. I would like to know shall i go for second opinion or it is fine, with inderal thyroid gland shrink.

Hello and thank you for asking on HCM!
I read your concern carefully.
The thyroid enlargment after radioactive iodine treatment should be explored further.
You need to check the thyroid hormonal level and do an ultrasound of the gland to see its structure.
If there are enlarged nodules in comparison with your latest ultrasound than a scintiscan would be the second step.
If there result to be cold nodule in scintiscan, the biopsy is recommended.
If the goitre is diffuse without nodules than you should start the treatment again ( of course if over active thyroid is confirmed by hormonal exams).
You should not start treatment without following the above steps.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
