What Causes Swelling In The Testicles?

My son is 28 and both of his testicles are swollen. There is no pain or fever. He works out every day and is afraid that he might have a hernia but my research says it is probably an infection. He is incarcerated in a work camp so seeing a doctor is difficult

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Brief answer: Examination or lab tests are needed to diagnose.

Detailed answer: There are a lot of reasons that can cause swelling of the testicles.
One of the most serious condition is testicular torsion. In this case, the testicles twist inside the scrotum. This is considered a medical emergency because it causes a blockage of the blood flow to the testicles, which can lead to tissues damage or death. A scrotal hernia may cause the swelling or a presence of a mass too.

In all these cases, it is necessary to perform an ultrasound to be able to make the right diagnosis. Besides the reasons mentioned above, infections can cause the swelling of the testicles like orchitis or epididymitis.

So it is recommended to perform some lab tests, to determine the cause of the infection. If there is presence of infection, it is necessary to take a course of antibiotics. And after finishing the treatment, he should redo the lab tests to check if the treatment was effective or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Genti Mulla
