What Causes Swelling In The Right Hand And Itching In The Body?

My husband,s right hand has been swollen for a couple of days now. tonight both of my his antiteragans (not sure that s spelled correctly) are red & swollen. His upper body is itching. His face is red & itching. He has been in remission for lymphocytic leukemia for a few months, but still takes 3 oral chemo pills each day. Today he mowed the grass. Is he having an allergic reaction or could this be something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry to hear that.

I have gone through your husband's medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case of rash with the history of lymphocytic leukemia and mowing lawn, I would come up with two possibilities, these include:

1. Given the history of lymphocytic leukemia, crises would be the most likely cause of rashes on the body and upper body and face.

If he is on treatment for lymphocytic leukemia, he should get his white blood cell count monitored regularly and see if the counts are good.

Whenever the counts increase the chances of bleeding episodes like rashes (more common) intracranial bleeding(less common), gastrointestinal bleeding can occur.

Skin lesions like rashes on limbs are common.

I would suggest to consult Oncologist and dermatologist to get the topical ointments.

2. It could be due to an allergy to pollen (as it is spring), given the history of mowing the grass. He also has itchiness.

This could be treated with antiallergics like phenylephrine which decreases redness and itchiness in 24 hours.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
