What Causes Swelling In The Hands And Lips While On Sulfamethoxazole?

I am taking sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds tablet. I went to urgent care last night with swollen lips and hands. They gave me a steroid shot and benadryl. They also prescribed steroid tablets which I started taking around noon today. However my upper lip is swelling again and I now have a rash around my waistline. Should I be concerned or give the steroids time to work overnight? At this time there is no trouble breathing.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Your symptoms are clear indication of allergy.
Sulfa drugs are one of the common cause of allergic reaction.
You should continue with anti allergics and steroids and if the swelling is not bothering your breathing then you can wait for the symptoms to reduce with the medication.
But in case if the symptoms become severe or exaggerate you should immediately consult an Emergency room..
Also start doing cool compresses over the rashes and apply calamine lotion..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
