What Causes Swelling In The Feet While On BP Medication?

My husband is having swollen feet. He has told his doctor for years. He was/is taking blood pressure medications, Plavix, Flomax meds. Doctor a couple of weeks ago, took out the hydroclorithyaside (I don t know how to spell that!) in the blood pressure medication, and then the feet got more swollen. So, we went back to the prior meds for a couple of days so far and the feet are still swollen and hurt on the top to the touch and he is now telling me that he thinks his kidneys hurt. His kidneys are at 50% and I think because of using that blood pressure medications for so long. I am wondering if there is a diaretic type med that won t affect kidney functions. Also he is getting little bruise spots, just 2 so far. The one disappeared and another popped up. To me this is an indication of possible internal bleeding possibly from the Plavix. I don t know. I guess I will call the dr. office tomorrow and see what if anything can be done. But I can t sleep, so I thought I would try to look up information. He had some blood tests within the last few weeks. One comprehensive, one basic. One fasting, one not. All they said was everything was stable . However, taking the blood pressure medication without the Hydroclorathiside brought his kidney to baseline. He also has issues after a gallbladder surgery in 2007 and had 2 umbilical hernias afterwards and has a mesh patch. Well, they say that is OK too. He is scheduled for a colonoscopy soon. Maybe this is just a mistake to write my concerns but I don t know who to really get answers from. He age is 85. He is fatigued a lot and tired. Do you have any knowledge of what if anything I should be doing to help more?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, there are several possible causes.

This may be a beginning of leg cellulitis which is inflammation of subcutaneous tissues and may develop into diabetic foot or even diabetic gangrene so any swelling, redness or pain in legs in someone who has diabetes should be evaluated by medical professionals since antibiotics may have to be started as soon as possible to prevent spreading of infection.

He should do at least basic blood tests and blood sugar to see if there is a significant infection or not. Other causes include deep vein thrombosis or lymphedema and these should be checked with an ultrasound exam.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
