What Causes Swelling In The Feet, Ankles And Legs?

My feet, ankles, and legs have been swollen for 8 months due to the need for knee surgery ( meniscus tear of left knee). Got that taken care of 2 months ago. The swelling had just started going down and then the right side (foot and leg) got really swollen and will not get better at all and both sides are really bad now, 3 weeks later. What is wrong? What do I do?

Hi, thanks for your query. I have read it and understand your concerns.

Answer: There could be a number of reasons for the swelling in your legs and feet. Maybe it is due to immobility where poor circulation leads to fluid stay in the tissues. Other causes could be infection, blockage in the vessels, poor kidney, liver and heart function etc.

If you were to see me, I would thoroughly examine your legs and other systems which would guide me to run basic tests (if necessary) to check your leg vessels, function of kidneys, liver and heart. The treatment would depend on the cause.

At this stage, I would recommend that you see your doctor who will examine you and treat you accordingly.

Hope this helps. And do not hesitate to ask for any further clarification if required
