What Causes Swelling In The Eye?

I woke up with a swollen eye, mainly the inner corner and under the eye. It is sore to the touch under the eye but there is no bruising. The eye itself is not red or sore. I put a cold compress on it and the swelling went down a little but when I got up again, the swelling was back. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
With the history you had given, I can think of 2 possibilities.
1) It may be an insect bite, say a red ant
2) something called a stye
The swelling comes up while you sleep off because it is loose tissue there which got damaged recently and there is dependent collection of fluid
Whatever the cause is, the treatment is the same. Give warm compress and wash eyes frequently with clean water. It will settle on its own. If it is a stye, it may take upto a week to settle and sometimes it may drain pus and then subsequently dry up. Hope this answered your question.
